I'm trying to connect two computers to the internet. I'm using a Motorola SB4101 modem and a D-Link DI-514 router. When I input the ip address that the router manual tells me to do, it won't work. I called D-Link and they TRIED to guide me through the setup process, but they said that there's something wrong with my TCP/IP thingy. Sorry if I'm not explaining this correctly or using the correct words. I'm new at this router stuff. But I did plug the ethernet cables correctly. I'm just having problems seting up the router. Can someone help me with this media state disconnected IP problem?

Where exactly are you trying to input an IPaddress?? Are you saying that you have the little bubble at the bottom right corner of your taskbar that is saying media state disconnected?? If so then you have a physical problem with the cable you are using to connect to the router, or your nic card is not installed properly. Lets start at the basics here.. With the cable plugged into your PC and the router, do you get a link light on both sides, (on your nic card near where the cable plugs in, and right on the router port near the cable end)?? We also need to check device manager under network adapters, and be sure yours is installed correctly..

I don't see no problem in the network adapters in the device manager. on the cable, theres no link light on both sides.

Are you sure you have the Ethernet cables plugged in correctly? Plug the cable modem into the router's WAN port, then the computers into the other ports on the back. If you aren't getting any lights on your computer's NIC, then it may be a bad router.

Well that tells us we have a physical layer problem here, which means either the port, the cable or the nic card. First thing that comes to my mind is, are you sure you are not using a cross-over cable there? cause if you are you need to change it out for a straight thru cable... What about the other computer, is it connected through the router and working OK??

Well untill you get a link light on both ends you'll not have connectivity, and if you think the cable is indeed a straight through cable and is good, then try a different port on the router and a different nic card in the PC. Thats why I posed the above question, cause if answer is yes then you have a known good port to try, if answer is no then maybe the router is defective..
