Need help.
I want to connect 2 PCs to a wireless router that connects to a Verizon (westell 6100?) dsl TA.
It was suggested to me to use a D-link wireless router.
Tell me if I have this idea right.
I will install wireless NICs on both PCs
(use the software to configure the nics, eg, channels; tx rate etc.
Since I will be using both through a router, Use infrastructure mode
configure them to tcp/ip (guessing this will already be there by default.)
I will hook the TA to the router.
Then I will open I.E. and type the routers IP into it.
From what I have been told the router does all the rest of the configuration.
Is this right...sounds too easy.
Both PCs are Dells running XP home.
I plan on doing this this week end.

I have the exact same setup going now, I might have a different number westell but it should be the same config. If you have any questions or problems PM me, I should be able to help or troubleshoot anything you run into...

Thanks Nictrix! I am sure I will take you up on your offer ;)
I was wondering if the game plan I have layed out sound about right also.
I have never set up anything yet.
Also, You say you have the same set up, what router do you recomend (have) and is it as easy as the guy who suggested this set up made it sound?
TIA

Hey Steve, the D-Link I have is the DI-524 wireless router with 4 ethernet ports and 2.9Ghz frequency for the wireless connection, I hope you don't have wireless phones on the same frequency, cuz I did!
My setup is the westell 2200 to the D-Link, then I have two computers on ethernet cables then one laptop on wireless and it connects anytime anywhere in my house, I have the WEP Securtiy on...And I connect thru Dynamic IP so you really don't need to mess with to much!
and yes the D-Link instructions are very simple to set up the network, you just got to remember what your access code and channels are when you set up the other computers to access the network.
I'd say go to D-Link to get more info on the router, however its an awesome router, works great!
Just post back if you need help!

Just to put your mind at ease option44, I've set up several of these routers on cable internet and they're a snap to install. I'll be installing another tomorrow. Keep in mind that you need to connect one pc via ethernet cable initially to configure the router. Once the router is set up, then you can add additional pc's via wireless connections. Then go back and convert the wired pc to wireless. Less headaches this way.
Another thing to know is the Westell 6100 is a modem and router combo. You need to make some adjustments in the Westell for the D-Link router to work right. Here's a good tutorial on setting up your exact hardware.

ITS UP....AND...Well its good, but..
some how I keep losing connectivity.
Could this just be a problem with walls and interference?
Im on the wireless node now.

How far away are you and do you have wirelss phones on the same frequency?
Are you losing connectivity from the D-Link or Westell go to both and check which page says your losing connection, then I will give you help on either one..

Well now I cannot seem to connect to anything on the wireless node.
The one wired to the router is the one I am on now.
I installed the usb nic and got a weak connection, now I cant get anything.
Also whan I use the d-link software to configure the wireless connection, It doesnt show me the screen that it says I should have.
Tried to connect to the router to check the settings, but I cannot access it because I dont know the user name or password

I am using a usb nic , microsoft doesnt seem to like the drivers.
I may have to look at another nic with the official BILL GATES flag eblazed on them.
The driver seems to be the problem...I think.
USB nics are a pain. If they are desktop computers, put PCI cards in, same brand and type as the router. If they are laptops, use PCMCIA.

Thanks glc.
I was hoping to stay out of the case, but here I am..;)
The usb adapter came with the router, Seemed like a good idea. But not.
Off to the store I go.
Sometimes I often wonder if all those people who think we never actually landed on the moon might just be on to something.
If we can put a lunar lander on an extraterrestrial surface with the processing power of a texas instruments calculator, why cant we just plug in something and expect it to work here on earth...:))
BTW...Thank you all for your help and advice!!!
HAVE A HAPPY AND SAFE NEW YEAR!!!
Steve
