SLOW connect speeds with new USR modem.

When I recently did a MB and CPU upgrade , I forgot to save the drivers for my modem and ran to Wal-Mart to get one for a quick fix. I bought a USR model 5699B and for some reason, I absolutely cannot get it configured to have even a half way decent speed of bringing up web pages. Also, if I need to do any program updates, forget about it !!! It's not happening. I still have my old modem which is a Conexant, but I can't find the model #. It has all of the stickers that came on it, but I don't know which one if any denote the model #. The sad thing here is, I had much faster download speeds with my old system that had the slowest celeron 2.8GHz and an Intel D845gvsr MB. I now have a 3.2GHz P4 and an Intel D848PMB MB.
So, if anyone can help me configure the USR or help me find the model # for the CXT, I would be grateful. Or, I'm perfectly willing to go buy another internal modem if someone can offer a few good suggestions.

The USR 5699B is a winmodem - software controlled. I'd recommend a USR 2976 - it's full hardware controlled, it's about 40 bucks from Newegg.

Read the numbers off the main chip on the CXT - we can prolly find you a driver if you want to try that again. Post what's on all the stickers too - that may give us a good clue.

Also, the only USR2976 modem I could find was OEM. Does that make any difference ?

The 2976 is OEM only. That only means it comes in a bag with no software or documentation. You can download the driver from USR's site. To get it to install in XP, you have to unzip the drivers onto a FLOPPY, point the hardware wizard to the floppy, and accept unsigned drivers.

Thanks GLC for your help. I tried a longshot and called eMachines since that's what my PC was before I gutted it and got a really cool tech guy who gave me the model # for the CXT modem. The only problem was that he could'nt tell if one of the numbers/letters was the number 1 or the letter I. here it is both ways as he read it to me MA560IV.92 or MA5601V.92. I just got it about 10 mins ago and have started looking, but no luck yet. Also, last night I was doing a search on another series of #'s I found on the CXT modem
RD01-D850 and got some results but not enough to get the drivers. Using
either CXT RD01-D850 or Conexant RD01-D850 I found a site by a comapny called Aztech I think that had the exact picture of my modem but no information that I deemed usable and now I can't find the site again...lol...
Oh BTW, as far as the USR2976 goes, I don't have a floppy drive. The closest
thing I have is an 8 in1 media card reader if any of those cards can hold the amount of data for that driver download.

Aztech no longer offers drivers for their analog modems. I would think if you went to the E-Machines website and looked up the original model number of the computer, you might be able to find a driver?

If any of your card readers are drive A, you can use that to install the USR driver.

Hey glc, just to satisfy my own curiosity, why do the drivers for that 2976 have to be on a floppy? If it goes through the hardware wizard, couldn't you just browse to the site of the driver file on the hard drive?

I would *think* so, but I've heard of issues doing it that way with XP because you have to use the Win2000 driver. I think the .inf file may be hardcoded to the A drive.
