alright.. here's my scenario: i'm in the middle of building a new comp... everything is connectected correctly including jumpers, but when i boot up, my dvd drive doesn't light up/signal that it's getting any power(although everything else is powered up:fans,etc.). Also, my new pci-e graphics card didn't come w/ a 6 prong pwr adapter so i can't view anything on the monitor. i've checked this dvd drive in my friend's comp and it works so im kinda frustrated. help me:eek:
(some more help plz... for my friend)
my friends scenario: his comp is built and running w/ windows and he recently reinstalled(which didn't help his problem). the problem is that he has a maxtor 250 gig internal hard drive that's only reading 30 gigs... (it only allowed him to make a partition of 30 Gb) he has SP 2 on his windows and he did everything he knows but any suggestions could help. also HIS dvd player will not let him load windows so he had to unplug it from the mobo so it loads. lets REFRANE: hard drive doesnt read full capacity and if dvd drive is connected than windows wont load up...... LOTS OF PROBLEMS HELP US OUT!!!!
1. 6 prong power adapter:

2. Recheck the jumpers and cabling on the DVD drive and any other drives on the same channel in both computers.
3. Check the jumper on the Maxtor, sounds like the cylinder limit jumper is installed. Either that or you are trying to set up a FAT32 partition, 32gb is the limit there with XP, you need to use NTFS.

Does the DVD drive tray open if you disconnect the IDE cable?

Cricket, I would've never thought of that! To my disbelief, the power light lit up and the disk drive opened up! (that's when the IDE cable was disconnected). So what should I do next? New cable? New slot?(although none of the other ones work either).

Check the jumpering on the drive again.

the drive was already jumpered when i bought it, so i wouldnt think it's incorrect. i tried two different cables and it still won't work when the IDE cable is connected. It only works w/ the power cable :(
at least i know that my psu is not defective (1 less problem to worry about)

**this is an accidental post** - sry.
If you did not CHECK the jumper and set it correctly, I'm betting that's your problem. You have 3 choices - Master, Slave, or Cable Select.
Describe the cable setup and jumpering, please. Is it a 40 or 80 wire cable, what color is the motherboard end, what color is the middle connector, what color is the other end connector? What connector is the drive on, what is the jumper set to? Is there another drive on the cable, and if so, what is it jumpered to?

i use an 80 wire cable which came with my disk drive. i connected it to IDE2 (on my motherboad) and i tried IDE1 also, which is red (i know it's for the HDD though). my cable has black, blue, and grey ends. i plug the blue one into the mobo, black to the disk drive, and the grey one is unused. i only have one disk drive and it's jumpered to MASTER - ::[:]
Try Cable Select. 80 wire cables are designed for that. The drive on the black end will automatically be the master. If it still doesn't work, the drive is defective.

alrighty, this is weird... i tried Cable Select and it doesn't power up. but again, if i pull out the IDE cable, it works. By this point, i would definately think it's defective, but my friend's PC is at my house, so i connected my drive the same exact way, booted up the computer, installed it, and it works perfectly fine. should i just exchange the drive or maybe if i did, i'd have the same problem again? if the drive didn't work in another PC, i would definately know it's defective, but that's out of the question.

I can't fix this problem in any way. Do you think I should just return my motherboard and get a new one? My drive works fine in other machines, so ill keep that. The only conclusion I have is that there's a problem w/ my mobo.

Did you try a different IDE cable yet? I'd try that before I returned the motherboard.

oh yeah... i tried a few different IDE cables. I even tried a couple 40 wire cables instead of the 80 wire ones. Nothing worked. this is the strangest problem i've ever had. i'm certain it's the mobo. thanks for the help though!!

My motherboard is a Gigabyte 945PL. My cd drive doesn't open. Same with HDD. Oh and both cd-drives and the HDD seem to have no power to them, or they seem to have NOT booted up. I removed the IDE cables from the motherboard and the drives booted up - the CD drives booted up and you can clearly hear the hard drive spin up. If i plug them back in, they dont work? Its as though something has been reversed - they only work when NOT plugged into the motherboard. I really dont have a clue whats happened here. I've done the usual, unplugged all the leads, chips, power etc - and nothing works. Ive taken the motherboard battery out for 10 mins and still i cant reset it.
Anyone ever had a problem like this - im sooooo confused.
P.S. switching cables, various jumpering combinations, correct pin locations, and new drives have already been tested. i've been struggling w/ this for more than a week and am really frustrated. thanks help in advance.

I have the same problem with an OEM LG 16X DVD Dual Layer burner in a home-built computer; no matter what jumpering I do, no go(same thing, drive door dont open with IDE cable in, opens without IDE cable, BIOS dont see it...driving nuts)... I dont think your DVD drive is bad, it is probably incompatible(ewwwwwww).
why?, 'cause when I put the same drive in my DELL dimension PC, it worked, go figure.
lesson learn, not all hardwares are compatible and we are in year 2006...sigh.
I guess you have to get another brand.
A thought: Is your power supply 24 pin? Do you have the 4 pin connector plugged into the motherboard in addition to the main 24 pin?
