I am dropping my internet connection, even though the network connection says connected and signal strength is excellent. When I click on the network connection status it says every thing is connected, but no internet. Here are my specs:

-Linksys Wireless- G PCT Adapter connected to my desk top which is four feet away from the router.

-Linksys Cable Modem Model: BEFCMU10

-Linksys Wireless-B Router2.4 gHz 802.11b Model: BEFW11S4

-Windows XP Pro SP2

-Comcast cable internet

-Network Authntication= open

-Data encryption= WEP

-Wireless Network Connection 4 Status
Speed: 11.0 Mbps
Status: Connected
Signal Strength: Excellent

I have updated and ran in safe mode: Ad-Aware, Spybot Search and Destroy, CW Shredder, Trend online, AVG, and High Jack this log. And every thing came up clean. I have updated every thing I can think of too. I have never had any problems with my computer itself, just the internet staying connected. The building is brand new with brand new cable plugs. When the internet is working the speed test all show even faster than 6 Mbps, it is usually very fast it just drops. I can't think of any other info so let me know if there is some thing else I can tell you. Thanks for any help.

Do you have any 2.4GHz cordless phones in the area?

No I have a 900 Mhz phone, but would this actually change my signal strength? Because my signal strength has always shown excellent. Or would the cordless phone knock my internet out. Just to give more info the cable modem is connected to the wall and the router without being physically connected to any other computer.

Thanks again, Matt

Okay. How often does it drop? Could just be that the modem and/or the router needs to be cooled down and restarted. If not, give this (http://www.spychecker.com/program/winsockxpfix.html) a go. If the frequency of a device matches that of the router, it will interfere and stop transmissions.

Thanks Gizmo. I down loaded and ran the winsock xp fix, and rebooted. I will monitor the connections and let you know. Then I will disconnect the phone. I don't want to do two things at once then I won't know which one fixed the problem. I have turned off the modem and router several times even for extended period of times.

It is inconcistent on when it drops, but probably 4-5 times a day at different times.

Thanks for the program I will see if that does the trick. I read some of the info on the program and is it fixing an issue from XP or my ISP? By the way when I rebooted it connected right away, which I have had problems with before so I will keep my fingers crossed that might have been the problem. I will let you know. -Matt

If your BEFW11S4 is version 4, that's a known lemon. Whatever version it is, it would not hurt to update the firmware and do a hard reset on it - and set it up again.

If the desktop is only 4 feet away from the router, why are you running it wireless? Use a CAT5, lots less hassle.
