What's the difference between the asus a8n-deluxe and a8n-premium motherboards except the $1 dollar price difference on newegg.com? Also, do the asus boards have ide controllers for the older hard drives? or is it necessary to buy a new sata hard drive?

Typically the difference between deluxe and premium is that the premium boards have more components (additional SATA ports, USB ports, etc). These boards should still have IDE controllers/connectors. mainly because optical drives have not gone the way of SATA yet. So you can still use IDE drives on the board

I believe another difference between those two boards is the cooling of the chipset. Whereas the deluxe uses a chipset fan, the Premium uses heatpipe technology connected to a fanless heatsink.
If the price difference between the two really is only $1, go for the Premium.

Quite right.
the deluxe board has issues with the chipset cooler, and asus have replaced them with a better fan. even so , i think they have redesigned it by using the heatpipe option on the premium . either way , both are fantastic boards, but id go with the premium if i had to buy one today .

The Premium uses heat-pipe technology to keep the chipset cool. The Deluxe uses a regular heatsink and fan.
The Premium gives you one PCI-Express X1 slot but the Deluxe gives you two.
There are probably other differences but I didn't bother to go over everything. If you'd like to, here are the ASUS web pages for those motherboards.

I believe the premium has support of the X2 (dual core) + Sempron and the Asus AI Cool-Pipe.
