Slow bootup after installing sata hard drive

Basically before i added the sata hd the computer booted up quickly finding all the drives and moved on quickly to the windows xp loading screen with the progress bar. Now when starting up the computer it takes a good 2 minutes to find all the drives and when it gets to the windows xp loading screen it takes another 5 minutes or so to finally find the drive with windows on it.

Is this a home built computer or a name brand one?

What brand and model SATA hard drive are you using?

I heard somewhere that xp likes to have problems with SATA drives, dunno why.

Its home built and here are the specs:

P4 1.8ghz
512mb ddr ram
ASUS P4P800-SE mobo
WD 40gb 8mb cache ide hd
WD 160gb 8mb cache sata hd
Nvidia Geforce 3 ti200
ENLIGHT 360W psu

Is the SATA RAID function turned off in the bios? It should be set to Enhanced only. The SATA drivers need to be installed in Windows, and the SATA hard drive needs to be taken out of the boot order.

I checked the bios...the sata raid was turned off and was already set to enhanced. Also i am booting windows off the 40gb ide hd not the sata, so do i still need the drivers? The boot order didn't have the sata hd in it. So I don't know what it could be. If you have anymore ideas please let me know, cuz at this point i'm at a lost

Yes, you still need the SATA drivers if you have a SATA drive - whether it's the boot drive or not. If there are any flagged devices in device manager, install the drivers for them.

I looked all over to find the sata drivers for the wd1600jd and can't find anything. I've read some other threads around the net and they seem to think that you shouldn't need these drivers unless you are booting windows off of it. So if you can find the drivers or know where i could get them i can try it out.

No, you don't need drivers for the drives, you need drivers for the controllers. They are on your motherboard CD or can be downloaded from the motherboard manufacturer. Are there any yellow flagged devices in device manager?
