Hi,

After hearing all the problems with the XBox 360 i decided not to buy one.
Anyway,Im gonna be getting the Playstation 3 when its hopefully released early this summer in the uk so fingers crossed it will be;)

Does anyone know if the Ps3 will have a hard drive?Or an external hard drive which you have to buy seperate?
Thanks

I'm guessing it'll be similar to the XBOX 360. Kinda hard to say for certain, as it hasn't been released yet.

Knowing sony they will trey and milk you as much as possible. IT will most likely be memory cards.

The PS2 had a HDD you could add on for games like FFX. I don't see why the PS3 would not have the same option. It might even be able to use USB for and external one. But it's simply too early for us to making these kinds of posts right now. Lets at least wait until E3 and see if they have some kind of prototype availiable for the public, rather than just demos and videos.

If you check out the PS3 FAQ (http://ps3.ign.com/articles/636/636848p2.html) on Ign, they say the following:

Will the PlayStation 3 come equipped with a hard drive? How big will it be?

Sony will make a hard drive available for the PlayStation 3, but it will be a separate add-on. It will be a 2.5" removable drive, allowing you to transport large files and swap it out for other drives for more space. Additionally, the drive will come with a version of Linux pre-installed, thereby making the PlayStation 3 a full-fledged PC as soon as the HD is installed.

Sony has not yet announced a size for the drive, though it's basically hinted that it will increase the capacity of available drives for sale over time.

They state it as if it were fact, but I think it can change at any point. I can't see Linux getting installed on there. Maybe a bootable version from a DVD or something but I think people would be quick to screw it up by fiddling with it if it were on the hard drive. A separate add on seems reasonable to cut back on cost. There's probably a few people that will purchase memory cards only.

Im sure if the os came on the harddrive, there would be a restore partition.

That might be more cost effective than seding DVD's with all the hdd's. Also, that would keep people from claiming they lost or broke their DVD. Even though you can get Linux for free, I don't think Sony would want to be mailing out more discs everytime someone sneezed.

I don't know. I can't see the casual gamer using Linux without screwing it up, or even knowing how to restore a hard drive if they did. All it takes is a couple of 10 year olds getting in the file system and it's ruined. I can definitely see something like DamnSmallLinux being packed on maybe a bootable CD-ROM or something. That way, all they would have to do is reset the system and it's back to normal. I wish they would release more information on this.

You can count on the PS3 to have problems when it's released... just like any first run product.

I agree that Sony will, for sure, tack on every proprietory thing they can and charge a premium. That's what they're good at.

geh -.- linux...i dont want video game consoles to turn into damn PC's. Hell just make a drive for PC's which allow them to play ps2,ps3 and ps games -.-

Although if they did that Sony would lose so much money :P
