View Full Version : Custom Avatar - How?

OK, I see the "Do not use an avatar" radio button with the note under it saying that clicking the button will wipe out any custom avatar, but I don't see the radio button for choosing one's own custom avatar. What am I missing?

Thanks!

You must be a 11-bit status member (1024 post) or greater in order to chose your own custom avatar.

That makes sense. Something like $30 a year? Looks well worth it to me.

Correct - you need 1024 posts or become a supporter to use a custom avatar.

A couple more things to keep in mind. The Supporter fee is meant to offset the advertising you normally see as popups. When you become a Supporter, those ads disappear. And the 1024 posts do not include posts in the General Discussion area.

OK, thanks! Much appreciated.

Have read about this avatar stuff since joining forums. Is there any advantage to having an avatar, custom or not, or is it just a personal choice? Can't figure out the big deal. RevCLB

Besides being able to customize your signature, an avatar is nothing more than a little bit of expression. Like in mine I have my computer case - just a little bit about me, showing that I like computers and stuff.

Is there any advantage to having an avatar, custom or not, or is it just a personal choice? It helps to identify members quickly. If you know what a member's avatar looks like you can find his posts easier than having to read all the user names in a thread.

If you have an image of decent size which you would like to display, you can always make sure it fits the size limit and stick it in your signature.

I use mine to find when I last posted in a thread, and also to screen other posts so I can skip past the ones I don't like (fortunately not many of these)

It's not vitally important, or worth post padding for, it just helps a little. If you use it to express a bit about yourself, bully for you. I personally use mine to scare people away from reading my posts so they don't wreck their computers doing something stupid like actually listening to me

You can go here (http://forum.pcmech.com/profile.php?do=editavatar) and change your avatar (I think the link will get you there). You can upload a small picture or link to one. (Or choose a preset one)

Also, go here (http://forum.pcmech.com/profile.php?do=editsignature) and enter in a signature.

I have never ever seen a forum where you need to post an enormus amount or pay money to show an avatar.

Fair nuf its worth it to pay to get rid of ads and to support the hard work that goes into this site(and when i can afford it....I'll pay cuz I appreciate it).....but its just a picture to define yourself in a large community.

If we are left with default avatars....can we have more than just an american flag or brand names?

glc

Nick, we recently expanded the default avatar choices from just 2 of them. We don't plan on adding any more in the foreseeable future.

Posts in General Discussion don't add to your total and one line vulgar acronyms get removed since they contribute nothing to a discussion and they are a violation of our rules of proper language.

More importantly read the rules (big yellow button up top) and find the size limitations....Then find an image you'd like to use...Then use a image resizer (I used a microsoft powertoys resizer ( found in tip of the day)) resize the image to spec...save in to your harddrive the correct size and then browse for it in the avatar section of your usercp and upload it...

You can use a image in your sig too... I would suggest hosting a sig image at imageshack and pasting the url within image tags...it's easy to do...

If you do decide to put an image in your sig, please keep the size rules for sig images in mind.

Images in sigs are not allowed to be over 125 pixels high and 400 pixels wide.

Hi MaxRat, I have been to the rules section many times. I just do not have the knowledge or expertise to send the images required. Are you willing to PM me to guide me? I have an image I want but don't know how to send it.

Hi HAL9000, if you will notice, I am a supporter. Please read above paragraph. Thanks, RevCLB:o ;) :)

Rev, you have PM.

MaxRat
04-24-2006, 07:28 AM
looks like Hal may have you covered...

I understand this may not be as easy as it sounds as in the way to do....I spent 2 to 3 hours learning how to host an image and put it in my sig at another forum...bad thing was....it's only a 2 second job...once I learned how it wasnt so hard...

The main thing is with an avatar you have to know the size has to be a maximum by rules 100 pixels x 100 pixels ( you check this by right clicking and checking the properties of the image)... If it's not then you'll need to resize the image.... Once resized then you re-save it and then while in the usercp just click upload image in the edit avatar section and browse for it on your pc...then your done... As stated before I use the Free image resizer from microsoft power toy (found via search engine)

OR.... If you ask a moderator nicely and send them the image they can do it for you...they have the ability to edit your account....I am not saying they will but...they maybe able to guide you and help you.....just as Hal9000 is doing....good luck...

The Idea of this forum is not to rack up a post count just to get a avatar status... But it is to learn and then take what you learn and apply it to helping others with what you learned...

the only dumb questions are the questions not asked...unless it's just useless, stupid information used to gain more post...
