Hi PC Guys & Gals,
I just would like to share with all of you here about me being a newbie in IT industry. After working for a few months here in an insurance company, I meet nasty colleagues as well as the nicer ones...The nasty ones are really nasty...There was once I tried to solve one of the agents email problem and when i could not resolve her problem, she said " You dun seem to know anything, I expect you to help me solve the problem since you are in the IT" I was quite upset by her statement.....
I am beginning to realise that working in IT line can be very stressful. Not only the work, the ugly users as well....Sometimes I have problems answering their questions. They like to shoot me questions like how can this happen, how do you do it, blah, blah, blah...But the most frustrating is that, they (being the IT ignorants & illiterates) did not believe what I say....
I hope many people can share with me what they have gone through in this forum....

"I expect you to help me solve the problem since you are in the IT"
That's not really unreasonable is it?
It takes time to be able to troubleshoot/fix issues. Your users are getting stressed too...Just because their pc is down doesn't mean that their phone stops ringing. They also know that once their pc is backup and running that they'll have a few dozen emails waiting to download...

Hhhmmn....Ok, all this comes with experience....I guess most newbies like me would likely face the same situations.
But it's just that sometimes I do not know how to handle them.

Have you received my favorite... you JUST sit down at the computer and they say.... so what's wrong with it? .... Umm... well... if I knew that, I would be gone already.

you JUST sit down at the computer and they say...so what's wrong with it?"I think the problem is the I-D-10-T working with it."

Ha ha ha ha! Man, you crack me up. :D
Seriously, pcloverfun, it will get better as time goes on. Are there any other IT workers around you that you can ask for help? Also, don't forget that PCMech is full of people who have forgotten more computer knowledge than I will ever know. How do you think I figure out the tough problems?

That is how it has always been.
A long time ago I walked into a DP department to be greeted with "Welcome, if you can't fix the machines better than the last guy we'll get you fired too".
There is nothing wrong with not knowing the answer. Don't BS the user, tell them you don't know.
As soon as you think you know the answers you'll find that the questions have changed. Or that the old answers don't work anymore.
It will get better with time.

Plant some drug paraphernalia around their desk and get them fired. Then when they're walking out the door with their cardboard box of belongings, go up and ask "Excuse me, I think my ______ fell out when I was working on your computer earlier today. Do you know where it is?"

This is why i wouldn't work the same hours as users if i was a tech. Work nights and have the users file work requests. Then you can fix the computers without even seeing the user.

Ha, ha,ha,ha,ha,ha.....LOL!!! You guys are cute and funny....
I do agree with you doctorgonzo....I will definitely get use to them and the work environment as the time goes on....
I realised that study and learning through books are not enough.:( There are lots of things to know in IT....
the main reason they complain is because they have absoluely no idea what is going on and how much of trouble it takes to first identify the problem let alone fix it.
they have no idea....really. their so lost when it comes to computers they end up blaming you when they have obviously screwed up the computer by opening an virus attachement or someother stupid thing.
