Total noob here, needs some help with new build

i've managed to get the thing to turn on inside the case. im proud almost. I have no idea what to do next, no idea how to get windows installed or anything. I have a 37g Raptor HD, p4p800 se asus mobo, 1024 ram, intel pent 4 socket 478, (mobo is a 478 socket) Not sure if anything else is important. When i turn it on i can get into the bios, but thats about it. Not sure what else i gotta do and just need some help. Anyone?

You need to have your OS disc in the CD/DVD ROM drive. Then, just follow the instructions in your motherboard manual, or refer to http://www.pcmech.com/byopc/step/18/ for extra help.

Windows XP Installation Guide (http://www.pcstats.com/articleview.cfm?articleID=1435). If you're not using XP just google windows (your version) install guide and you will get a bunch to choose from.

But there inlies a problem, i put the OS in the cd drive and restart, but nothing happends. My manual doesn't tell me how to install, other than to just do it. It also says for the most part the BIOS doesn't need to be configured much and just left at defaults. What do i have to do to get the computer to run the cd?

Go to your boot configuration in BIOS, and set it so that your CDROM drives are at the top of the list. It might be called boot priority or boot order, or something along those lines.

Set the optical drive you are using as first in the boot order. Put the windows CD in it and reboot. It should start installing. Download a guide and follow that. There are places where the installer tells you to hit any key where you actually don't want to hit one. Read throuugh the guide a few times so that you know what to expect as the installation proceeds.

yea i did that and still nothing when i boot up. I have the first priority set to the LiteOn blah blah which is my cd/rom drive, anything else i might have messed up with, one thought, could jumpers affect this?

How many optical drives are you using? What type of cable? What IDE channel(s)? How are they jumpered?

I have one optical IDE drive. Type of cable i think is the IDE right? not sure what other cable would be used, it is connected into I believe the second IDE channel (the one the mobo manual says the optical connects to), and i have the jumper on the 1-2 pins

I'm also wonder if I still have something to configure on the Mobo it self, to alow it to run, but again not sure what to do

Does the BIOS see the optical drive now?

Does the IDE cable have 3 different colored connectors? Or are the connectors identified with mainboard, slave and master tags? If it's a 80 wire IDE cable you have to set the drive jumper to CS (cable select).
