View Full Version : DIAL-UP Password not saved

I've been using Win98 SE and IE 5.5 for several months to surf the net. Originally my dial up connection would remember my password and all I had to do was hit the connect button to log on. I now have to enter the password manually and the check box that would allow the dialer to remember the password is no longer available - it's shaded out.
I am not sure, but I think the change took place about the same time I configured Outlook Express a couple of weeks ago. It doesn't matter if I hit the IE icon or the Outlook Express icon, the password must now be entered manually and I don't have the option to save it.
Does anyone have an idea how to re-enable the "save password" feature of my dial-up connection?

Yeah, try one of <a href="http://support.microsoft.com/support/kb/articles/q137/3/61.asp?LN=EN-US&SD=gn&FR=0&qry=password%20greyed%20out&rnk=1&src=DHCS_MSPSS_gn_SRCH&SPR=W98">these</a>. Most likey installing Client for MS networks will do the trick.

Thanks for the link. It did not solve the proplem because the network client was already installed. However, the article also mentioned that I should log in to Windows as an unique user in order to get the option to save passwords. I created a user account and sure enough, I can now save my password, not only for log in purposes but also for the Dial Up connection.
Thanks again for pointing me in the right direction.

Your RNA.PWL file in c:\windows might be corrupt.
Search for it and delete it, you should then be able to save passwords under any username.
(Only try this after reinstalling Client for Microsoft Networks)

Thanks for the lead Jim, but I have no RNA.PWL file on my system, before or after reinstalling the Microsoft Client.
Against my better judgement, I created a user profile and called it PCuser When I log in as PCuser, I get the checkbox to save my password when using my dial-up connection. Saving my password so that I don't have to keep re-entering it is my end goal, but here's the rub:
After I shut down my PC and do a cold boot, I am logged into Windows automatically. There is no login dialog box to allow me to decide which user I am going to be. Windows therefore assumes I am using the default profile (which has no name or password by the way) and logs me in without a dialogue. Of course this default user cannot save passwords - my original problem. However, if I log off the default user, I then get a dialog box with PCuser as a choice and the option to save passwords.
This really stinks because in order to get the save-password option, I must log in to Windows without a dialogue, log off, and then log in again as the PCuser.
Something is basically wrong here but I can't figure out what it is.
In fact all you had to do to start with is :
Remove ALL in the Network Icons Window and then restart and add it again this will bring back the Password Option somehow it got corrupted - by adding Dial up Adapter and Microsfoft Network &&&& Windows will reinstall the needet files for this - but now since you have created this Pcuser you first must delete the PCuser account then go to FIND type *.PWL and delete all of the found files restart and when asked for the password just hit enter - this password is For Windows Logon - be sure the after that you add
1.Microsoft Network client or what ever it's called
2.Dial up adapter
3.TCP/IP
that's all you need and you will get your password box option back
All this do only if you are the only one user on this computer..
Hpro - all that is not necessary. I have seen this exact problem before.
The repair is - open Regedit and search for "autologon". When it's found, just delete this key.

Hpro, glc, K A Hall, et.al., ,
You guys are all terrific. Microsoft recommends doing all of the above and never bothered to mention that all I had to do was delete the key. 1000 thank-you's to glc and K A Hall in particular -- you saved me a lot of effort and trepidation.
I sure hope you guys are getting paid big bucks in the real world :)
