Integrated vs card [Archive]

I was just wondering, is an integrated nVidia 6100 really better that a FX5200, FX5600, and the FX 5900?
I also want to know all of the integrated video chipsets that support Direct X 9 and which one is the best.

Generally a video card is always better than an integrated video chip.

Yes...yes it is....
But...the onboard uses system resources...while a card pretty much for the most part uses it's own....

I only use onboard video for email surfing machines....although I have used it myself with "online" games with very little lag.... but running a game from cd is a pain and very slow if it's intensive.....

video cards are the way to go if you want to do some moderate gaming...

So if I get a FX 5xxx, I would get better fps than an integrated 6100? If I get a decent cpu like a 4400 X2, would it still matter?

I don't know if you are saying that you want to get the X2 or just saying that as an example. But, it'd be silly to get a $600+ CPU and a sub-$100 video card, especially for a gaming rig.

I agree 100%! If you're spending that much on a really nice CPU an FX5200 would be a disgrace to that CPU!

If your budget is really tight, you would be better off cutting back on the CPU a bit and getting a better video card. The video card has more impact on game performance than the CPU.

A Sempron with a decent video card would probably game better than a X2 with a lousy one. I wouldn't even think of doing a gaming build with anything less than a 6600GT - and NEVER use onboard video for gaming. It's just not worth the hassle, even with the latest Intel, Nvidia, SiS, Via, or ATI onboard video. If you have a hard budget figure, back off on the processor.

If you want to build with onboard video, you might as well just buy an E-Machine.
