I dont think nero or nero express support subtitles.
you probably need to "hard code it" into the video before using nero to brun the video.
If you have a newer standalone DVD player that can play divx file then you can just burn the video and subtitle files as data file into a dvd and it will play fine.
If not, then you can use a software like VirtualDub to hard code the subtitle into the video before using nero express to burn.

Nero Burning ROM or Express don't need to support subtitles. It's not something they have to support.
You do not need to hard code it (you would'nt be able to turn it off, and you'd never be able to remove it completely, ever).
Subtitles are multiplexed into the VOB file, and it's the authoring program that does the part. When creating the VOB file by muxing video and audio files, the subtitles are also muxed into that file. With Nero you just burn the files, it's no difference whether there is a subtitle track in the VOB or not.
Now you only need an authoring program that supports subtitles. I can't name you the ones that do. . . I believe DVDLab Pro does. Since there should be a trial version I'd get it and use it.
Don't know if DVDLab Pro accepts the srt file. If not, you'd have to convert it into another format. But first you need to know what kind of subtitle file DVDLab Pro, or another authoring software, accepts.
Nero VisionExpress is also an authoring software, so you can check the help file if it supports subtitles.

Alright there,
im having the same problem as the top guy, i wan to burn my avi to dvd and add the subtitles.
ive tried using dvd lab pro but it wont open the .avi file.
ive downloaded virtual dub, that doesnt open the avi file!!
it comes up with an error:
Couldn't locate decompressor for format 'XVID' (unknown)
VirtualDub requires a Video for windows (VFW) compatible to decompress video. DirectShow codecs, such as those used by Windows Media Player, are not suitable.
CAn somebody help....im sure there is a simpler way to add subtitles when burning a dvd!!!!!
AVI file + subtitles on a DVD is not standarized. Some DVD players can play that, however there are still some parameters that have to be met.
Best way would be to create a DVD Video. For this, you need to convert your AVI to a DVD-Video compliant MPEG-2, and then you can import it into DVD Lab Pro.
MPEG-2 encoders are ProCoder, TMPGEnc, CCE, QEnc etc. you can use any of them.

Hello FireByyrd,
The official word (http://www.nero.com/nero7/eng/FAQs_DVD.html#1) on this is that Nero/Nero Express/NeroVision Express does not support subtitles when burning a VCD, SVCD or DVD-Video.
You should check out some other software to do this, e.g. VirtualDub or maybe one of the Ulead products like Ulead MovieFactory 4.
