Hi...

I normally run the Scandisk utility before I do a Defragmentation regularly in my system (Windows Me). Of late, I have not been able to complete a Scandisk run. What happens is that after a bit of scanning, I get a message that says:

"ScanDisk was unable to finish correcting this error because the top-level folder on this drive is full. Quit ScanDisk, delete some files from that folder, and then restart ScanDisk."

What do I delete? From where (C: drive?)? I tried deleting a few files that I thought were not necessary there, but I still get the same message. Please help!!!!!

I have also tried doing the scan in safe mode, but it gave the same warning. I also tried doing the scan after deleting all unnecessary files from my Temp folders, and from the Recycling Bin, and after closing all background applications except systray and explorer. But every time, the same message keeps on popping up.

I do not think it could be a virus, because I keep on doing regular updates for the virus utility I use.

Please suggest what I could do. I would be very grateful.

Thank you!

Dr Rasu

SYMPTOMS
When you are running ScanDisk, you may receive the following error message:
ScanDisk was unable to finish correcting this error because the top-level folder on this drive is full. Quit ScanDisk, delete some files from that folder, and then restart ScanDisk.

CAUSE
This behavior can occur if you are running ScanDisk with the Automatically Fix Errors option enabled and a file name (including the file's full path) exceeds 259 characters.

RESOLUTION
Run ScanDisk with the Automatically Fix Errors option disabled. When ScanDisk encounters the same file, it will prompt you repair the error, delete the file, or ignore the error and continue.

Thanks MadMax,

I did that last night, and FINALLY managed to get the Scandisk to complete the task (after having to delete several files etc etc). I have also done the defrag now, and I am a happy man. :p ...

Thanks again.

Dr Rasu.
