I have a Dell Dimension 8200 with RDRAM 128MB/4 800-45 ECC. I want to to put in 512 more. All else being equal, what is the difference between 256MB/16 and 256MB/8?

I'll tell you right now, SDRAM is going to costs you a boatload. I did a search on Corsair's website and came up with a 512MB moduel, and it's over $300.
Unless you can get it used, as blue said it will be very expensive and not worth it at all. Also he meant RDRAM not SDRAM.
Either one is compatible - and you DO have to install it in matched pairs. If you have ECC in there now, you must use ECC. If you pull the ECC, you can use non-ECC.
Yes, the price of RDRAM is a killer, it's cheaper to build a new computer.
