Need Help

I am having problems with my first build.

Pentium 4 Processor 550, 3.4 GHz 800 FSB 1MB L2 cache
Asus P5GD2 Premium Motherboard
Corsair 2 GB DDR2 Memory (2 1GB sticks)
Diamond X1300 512MB PCI Express video card
Creative Sound Blaster Audigy 2 ZS Game edition sound card
Foxconn ATX case
Xclio 450BL PSU
WD 200 Gig SATA Internal hard drive
Sony CRX320AE CD-RW/DVD-ROM
Windows XP (OEM)

The machine fires up, but I get no beeps. In fact, I have never heard a beep from the MOBO. All the fans work, and things appear to be functioning normally. I can access the bios and everything appears in order (RAM, CPU, HDD). When I try and load Win XP, it starts to read it from the disk and copy files, but right before it starts the actual startup screen, I get a message that Windows detected a system error and will shut down. It says to check my HDD for viruses and run chkdisk/f.

At first I though the problem was with the HDD, so I returned it and got another. Well, I still get the same message. The problem is I can’t check the HDD or work on it on another system (my new one is my first with SATA), and even if I could, I don’t think the problem is with the HDD.

I am thinking the lack of beeps is telling me something is wrong with my system, which is also causing the problem with loading windows. The problem is, I can’t figure it out. Please help.

If is matters, I tried searching for a solution using the error numbers I get. “Stop: 0X0000007B (0XF7C7A524 – 0XC0000034 – 0X00000000– 0X00000000)”. I have found a few articles, but most of them are either talking over my head or sound like they are dealing with different components.

Remove the sound card for now and then try to install Windows.

Test your RAM with a memory tester like Memtest86+ or DocMemory.

Actually, I found this solution linked to another thread after I searched our site:

I had the same issue for the past two weeks and finally resolved it last night. I tried everything from the SATA II drives to memory incompatibilities and eventually it came down to my CD / DVD drives and the way that ASUS motherboards deal with onboard IDE's.

On my Asus P5WD2, which is very similar to yours, I have three onboard IDE's. Two of them are grouped together and one is sort of on its own on the side of the motherboard. Make sure that the optical drives (CD and DVD) are plugged into the side IDE and not the two that are grouped together.

Secondly make sure that you use the IDE cable with the blue, black and grey connector and not any of the other cables. Also remember to set the one drive as master and the other as slave and plug the grey connector into the master and the black connector into the slave and the blue one into the motherboard.

The problem comes from the fact that Windows or Linux (I've tried both) is seeing the optical drives as hard drives and therefore is not able to start up properly.


I was going to try this first, as it sounds like this guy was having the same problem I am. I have my CD-ROM drive plugged into one of the two IDE slots grouped together instead of the IDE slot on the side.

I also read I should try installing windows without the sound card. I will try that too. Is there a way to run a RAM tester without a floppy drive?

That's incorrect jumpering. Black is master, gray is slave, and use CS jumpering.

To put a happy ending on this thread, I tried the above solution (and set the jumper to CS) and everything worked out like a charm. My machine is now up and running and everything is great. It’s super fast too, which is really what I wanted. Thanks everyone for your help.

I would hooked up the hdd to another pc and save all the info that I need then reformat to get a clean verison of windows on there. I recently installed all new parts on my PC and had a similar problem,which went away after I re-formatted.
