DVD-Drive Woes

I have a DVD drive that I have been using for a while, I changed HDs and now I can't get the drive to work with my new HD. It has power, and is recognized on the IDE, shows up as drive D:\ . The problem is it wont do anything with discs. It seems to act like it perminantly has a blank CD-R in it or something, just bringing up a window like that for any CD's or DVD's I slip into it. It is a BTC Combo drive BCO 4816IM SN # p04337004543. I tried downloading some of the crap from BTC's website. But the flash updater dosn't want to update. I am royaly stumped here.

Which IDE cable are your drives attached to? It's best to keep the optical drives on a separate channel from the HDDs. Do you have them jumpered correctly?

I have 4 IDE Ribbon cables on my PC, each device is set as a master drive. My main HD is first master (C), my DVD-ROM is 2nd master (D), my storage HD is 3rd master (E). They all show up in my computer. I just can't get it to recognize when I put a DVD or CD in it of any type

Is DMA enabled on all the IDE controllers? Check that in device manager.

DMA? Where do I look for this in device manager?

Yes, in Device manager
click on "IDE ATA/Atapi Controllers"
Right clik IDE channel and select "Properties"
Then clik on "Advanced Settings"

Ok, it is enabled on both IDE controllers. I am not sure of my jumper settings, I don't know where the documentation for this is anymore. I have them set like this

with the I being the jumper. I assume that is master since that is how it was since before I swapped HDs. (my new HD is a SATA and the old one is a IDE, so I had them both master before, and 3 master now.) Also the firmware thing just has a greyed out 'Update' button and won't let me update. Got it from www.btc.com

SATA doesn't use jumpers, as they're on their own connection. Do you mean you have four flat IDE cables, or two cables with two connections on each? Maybe you could find some documentation on that site that shows you the jumper configuration if it doesn't say so on the drive.

I have 4 IDE cables. I have a really nice MOBO. It's 4 IDE cables, and 2 SATA. So I can potentially have 10 drives. Would my DVD drive show up in my computer if I had the jumper settings wrong tho?

It might - if you have each drive on a separate cable make sure it's on the end of the cable, not the middle. If it's a 40 wire, jumper it Master. If it's 80 wire, make sure the correct end is in the controller and use either CS or Master.
