So my mom bought this new computer, and her cd burner isn't working. This is the first time she used it and it isn't working. I have a question before I call Dell, hopefully, this will fix whatever is wrong.
I opened up her computer and looked to make sure it was connected and stuff and it was, but I noticed that the DVD ROM and CD burner were both set to Cable Select, should putting one as Master and the other as Slave make the burner work? Or does that not matter at all?
Its a Dell Dimension XPS 400 and it's only a month old. so What do you think?

If they were working before jumpered as CS, changing it to something different probably won't fix it.
How is it "not working"? Does it show up as a drive in Windows or not? Does it burn CDs? Does it read CDs?
If it is only a month old and still under warranty, I'd suggest contacting Dell.

I know the DVD ROM is working, but my mom said the burner was playing CDs before, but when I put one in, it wouldn't play. It shows up in Windows, but for some reason, it won't read CDs now, and it won't burn them. It doesn't even recognize theres a CD in it. This is the first time she tried to burn pictures on a CD so I'm assuming the burner never worked.
I was asking you guys because I don't want to call Dell. All they do is cause more frustration. BUt if you guys don't know, then I guess I'll need to call Dell. Any have suggestions before I give in and call them?

Try the CD burner in another computer. If it doesn't work there, it's broken. Since the DELL is new you shouldn't have a problem getting it replaced.

Dell cables are cable select - leave the jumpers be. Just make sure the cables are tight.
If the DVD drive is working but the CD burner isn't, you probably have a defective CD burner and Dell should take care of that on warranty with no hassle. It wouldn't surprise me - last I looked, Dell was using Samsung burners and those are not the most reliable drives around.
