I just download Gmail notifier and it runs in the system tray and tell you when you get a new gmail email. I looked in the task manager and it said it took up 8000K. That seems like alot when i compared it to the other stuff... do you think this little app is doing more than notifying my of email? Perhaps monitoring my activity? Would this amount of space effect my games? I play battlefield 2 and the like

That doesn't seem so bad. Volume Panel for X-FI takes up slightly more than that and so do a few other applications which I did not think would be so 'heavy'. If you are worried about it interfering with game play simply end the program before starting a game. I usually end quite a few *extra* programs before I load up a game like BF2 to help free up a few resources.
If you think about it though, it does have to constantly keep checking your inbox for activity.
You could do the same things with thunderbird and configure it to work with GMail. Every once and a while open it up, and it will check for mail immediately. Then it is only running when you want it to be and you can use it to reply and everything without having to log into GMail again.
If you use Firefox, you can simply download the gmail notifier extension.
