my computer will not boot at all. at this point the monitor doesnt even turn on. i have also tried to boot from a cd as well as a floppy. it did work once or twice but at this point i get nothing. i just took the hard drive out of the computer and put it in another computer as a slave drive. Thankfully I can access all my files on it. Now is there a way i can repair files on my HD now that i have access to another HD that works and also runs win98. Currently there are a little over 16gb of stuff i dont want to lose so formatting this drive isnt an option right now.
Try booting to it in the other computer - connect it up as the master and disconnect the main drive.
Boot it into SAFE mode and remove the ENUM key and it will probably be very usable. Refer to the linked thread below:

. . . and - are you still interested in saving the hardware from the original computer? If it won't boot from either a floppy or a CD, could be anything from a bad power supply, motherboard, video card, or processor. (You usually don't want to spend much on a machine more than six or so years old, since more powerful desktops can be had in the $300 (USD) range nowadays). If you've some spare parts lying around collecting dust, though - this might be their chance to be useful again.

i booted up in safe mode and removed the ENUM. hard drive will now boot from this second computer but when i put it back in the original computer, it still wont do anything. I can hear the computer turn on but the monitor stays black and nothing will boot. even from a disk. i'm guessing something else is wrong with computer. Any suggestions where to start troubleshooting. Keep in mind I am a novice who knows very little about computer repair.
