Need Recommendation for Gaming LCD

Hey all,

I'm looking to finally get rid of my 17" CRT and get an LCD. However, I'm not really that informed when it comes to LCDs. I know that I want a fast response time for gaming, but beyond that, I really have no idea. So, can you guys recommend a good 17" LCD that would be fast enough for gaming?

I just got my Hyundai L90D+ in November and I love it, 19" with built in speakers. I dont know much about LCD's either but other members on here said that this monitor was the best for the money so I got it and am very happy with it. The speakers are not the best but I have a set of Dell speakers that I use on it. I start a new job on monday and with my first bit of extra cash I plan on getting a second screen. :)

I bought a 17" Samsung 740B and I really like it. Digital display, awesome colors, great for gaming, doesn't break the bank. Definitely owns my old CRT.

I just got a Samsung Syncmaster 930B also. It is great...the picture quality is outstanding.

The things you want to look at when considering an LCD are the contrast ratio (the higher the better) and the response time (the lower the number the better) and the monitor refresh rates and whether or not it has a DVI input. (cable sold separately) To use DVI, you will need to have a video card that has a DVI interface as well.

I have the BENQ FP91G+ 19inch 8ms lcd monitor makes for a good gaming monitor. I used it in Quake 4.. and you'll expect ghosting from an LCD monitor, but personally I didn't see any REAL ghosting that was really a problem. Bascially I think this monitor is a cheap 240 dollar monitor that can get the job done for games.. free shipping too.

I also have thee B90, not L90 hyundai 8 ms... but I'm assuming they're the same model? but mine doesn't come with speakers... got mine from office depot and it is also a very great monitor for gaming. Uses a Samsung TN panel too. But between the two BENQ and hyundai, I can't tell the difference, but are top-notch!

I actually recommended the BenQ and the Hyundai L90D+ in another thread recently. The Hyundai is better, but more expensive because the BenQ has a $60 rebate right now. I don't think you can really go wrong with either one, though.

The top-rated LCD according to Tom's Hardware is a Viewsonic, but it's $400! :eek:

Thanks for all of your suggestions guys. I'm still deciding on which LCD to buy. Is there any difference between the Samsung 730B and the Samsung 740B? The only place I've looked that has the 740B is NewEgg; all of the local computer stores around me carry only the 730B. The specs according to Samsung's website look the same.

I have a Dell 2001FP... it's a thing of beauty at 1600x1200. I bought it a year ago for about $550 (before tax and shipping) and now it's at about $460.

Awesome monitor and a heck of a deal. Mine had zero dead pixels. Even has composite video for hooking up a console (like my xbox).

I have one too -- I didn't recommend it because 1600x1200 is a very high resolution for modern games, and because it's a 16ms S-IPS panel, which is pretty old technology compared to the current 8ms MVA Overdrive panels like the Hyundai and the BenQ have. A 20" LCD is a nice display to have, though, and there are some Samsung ones on Newegg priced similarly to the 2001FP that look like they have 8ms MVA Overdrive panels.

I actually don't know anything about LCD technology... What I do know is I like my monitor a lot, although there is the slightest ghosting, presumably because of the 16ms. I don't mind it at all, but lower is better I guess.

On the res issue, it's true it's better to play games fullscreen at the native LCD resolution. But with my 1600x1200 I actually end up playing my games in windowed mode. I actually prefer it and it means you won't lose quality when game settings are lower than 1600x1200. But yeah... if you want to play games fullscreen, it's best to match the native res to your graphics horsepower. Ideally, someone with a 7800GT playing FEAR might not want more than 1280x1024 in an LCD.

Playing in windowed mode I can get rid of distortion and have more desktop real estate. Which works great for me.

The 740B has the screen adjustment buttons on the front, clearly marked, and the 730B has them on the botton, in black, and they are very hard to see and use.
