how to seperate vocals from music?

Hi everyone

Is there a software ( preferably freeware!!!!!) that i can use to seperate the vocals of songs from the music?
What i want to do is keep only the music just like karaoke version of songs do.

That is a very difficult process. There are plugins for Winamp that allow you to do that by simply removing the frequency range the vocals are in, but other elements of the music are also lost on most songs, and you may still have remnants of the vocals. I have never seen a program that can do it perfectly.

Try using audacity. It has a visual editor to make it easier but still it is a hard process.

GoldWave (www.goldwave.com) has a vocal reducer tool but it doesn't work too well. It is near impossible to get a decent sounding song with the vocals removed.

Removing vocals is dependant one one thing: that the vocals are mixed at 50/50 of the stereo spectrum with little or no bleed through from right to left and left to right. With todays digital recording, producers and mixing engineers have so many options available to make a good mix they rarely if ever leave the vocals dead center of the mix.

As others have said, it's difficult to do under good circumstances, but next to impossible with todays music.
