Kind of a poll

I was given an older (2-3yrs) HP Pavillion Laptop. The only problem with it is that the hard drive needs to be replaced. I (think that I) am an above average knowledgeable person when it comes to computers but have little knowledge of laptops. I was wondering what is recommended for replacing the hard drive and would the newer Ata-6 or -7 be compatible? And would the 7200rpm HDs work? I would like to have at least an 80gig HD but probably wouldn't use it.

I was looking more for opinions I guess than advice. I know that technically I could put an ATA 166 drive in even if the laptop is setup for ATA 66 and that it will just perform as a 66. I just like to see product opinions especially if someone has had experience with the HP laptops.

Thanks for the link.

I hope I am in the correct forum.

Any modern 2.5" hard drive will work fine. Get whatever capacity you want -- I don't really think 7200 rpm laptop drives are worth it though. THeir extra performance just doesn't justify the much higher cost.

If it's a few years old, there may be a bios limitation on how big a drive you can put in. Look at that configurator that was linked to get an idea of what they have that works - that was a valid post.

EDIT - that configurator is useless - they show a 100gb drive for a laptop that I know for a fact can't take ove 8 gigs. Here's a better configurator:
