Logitech webcam woes

This is a Logitech Orbit MP webcam. It has been impossible to install. For starters, the manual says this:

1. Install the software FIRST, and follow the on-screen instructions.
2. During software installation, you are prompted to connect the camera USB cable to the USB port:
·Wait until you receive the software prompt before inserting the cable into the computer's USB port.
·Complete software and hardware installation by following the on-screen instructions. These instructions include an audio tuning wizard, which will ensure optimum audio performance. See the Audio Setup Guide for more information.

Alright, I follow the instructions religiously until step 2 and this is what happens:

Upon installing the SW asks for a reboot. Not a problem, I click "yes, reboot now" and it does that. Upon rebooting the installer asks to plug the camera to the USB port and I do that... and this is where all hell breaks loose. The stupid manual NEVER EVER mentions the Windows blob of "new hardware found" is going to appear and ask for one's confirmation to install the new hardware. Clicking cancel just prevents the camera from being installed so I have to click on Next and then it proceeds to install the new hardware. Then it pops up a message saying there was an error during the installation and that some hardware may not work properly. (I tracked the error to a double install of the camera's microphone, why it does that is beyond my ken). Then the window in the Logitech installer says to wait till the camera is set up and I can wait till kindgom come, for it never goes beyond that.

Any suggestions? I know for a fact the camera is not DOA as it installed in another installation of Windows.

This is Windows XP Pro SP1 (and before you suggest installing SP2 as the answer to my question and the panacea for all woes, the camera installed properly in another SP1 install, so please refrain).

Do other USB devices work ok?

If so, then uninstall all of the webcam's software, remove all indications of the webcam, its mic, and any other webcam related items from Device Manager, disconnect all other USB devices, and try again.
If that works, then reconnect the other USB devices. If there are problems with the webcam, then the USB hub may not have sufficient power to run it and the other devices. You may be able to work around this with a powered USB hub.

If the webcam still does not install after doing the above, then it may be incompatible with your MB. It happens.

Yeah, the printer does work. And no, the mobo is not incompatible, the camera installed perfectly in my games installation on the same computer. But I don't need the camera in that installation, but in my work one.

Check the Logitech site for any updated firmware for the camera.

If that does not apply or does not help, then uninstall everything related to the camera, and do a clean boot as described here:

Then, install the camera software, reboot, and connect the camera.

the camera installed perfectly in my games installation on the same computer. But I don't need the camera in that installation, but in my work one.Are you referring to 2 different partitions on the same HD, or 2 different HD's? If so, then do they both have Windows installed?

Two different partitions on the same HDD. Both have Windows XP Pro installed.

Sufficient unused space on the problem partition for the installation?

Something different running in the background on the problem partition?(Although doing a clean boot should have eliminated that possibility.)

Run Checkdisk on the problem partition?

There are lots of space.

I tracked the problem with the hardware install. For some reason, Windows installs the microphone twice. Even when installing the mike manually, it is installed twice.
