This is a 4 year old Satellite 5105 S701. Never had a problem b4. Last night I ran cpu-z, it started fine but when I clicked on the memory tab the laptop's screen went black. The little sub-lcd on the front was on with (memo error) displayed. Also the hdd and power lights where on. Holding the power button down for a few secs turns it completely off, and when a hit the power button again it just reverts back to the pre mentioned state. I'm searching toshiba's site now with no luck :(
Reseat your memory modules. If that doesn't work, you may have a failed module - if you have 2 in there, try it with 1 at a time.

Will do thanks. I do have 2 128er's, should I also try seating 1 at a time alternating slots? Could be a bad slot too right?

Well you were right! One of the modules was bad. And actually they are 256 not 128 so I guess I'm still decent with only one for now. I can get a 512 for this laptop for $48 and free shipping..... hmmm

If you are getting new sticks of RAM, check the model # at one of the RAM configurators at either Crucial or Corsair or one of the other high quality RAM manufacturers.

Does anyone think that 256 would be fine for this laptop .... it's just doing light duty.... email, web, some MS Office work???

I think it would be ok for just that.

Make sure it is compatible with your system...Even cheap memory is expensive if it won't work
Who is the manufacturer of the bad module? If it's a branded module, it may have a lifetime guarantee.

Looks like Toshiba. It's printed all over the stick.
