norton problem ?

Just before the windows desktop opens I had this error message __from norton anti virus auto protect "unable to initiate thevirus scanning engine database files " This message was in a red window and it is full stop everything . Not possible to go any further or to shut down(except by "pulling the plug") I can get into safe mode so is it possible to disable the anti virus from there ?

Maybe try going into Safe Mode, go to Control Panel, then Add/Remove Programs, and remove Norton. You could then reboot and reinstall to see if that fixes it. Or, go to www.grisoft.com and download the free version of AVG.
