what operating system are plannig on putting on your hp laptop after you reformat the hard drive? if you reformat the drive then that should fix all of your problems

no you wont need to hold the power button down to get it to shut off. you will be able to shut it down by clicking the start button, and click either turn off pc, or shut down depending on which OS you have installed and that will turn off your pc.

i had windows home edition xp installed.now i have xp professional.it is now much faster.
the laptop can only be turned off by depressing the on/off button.

Go into the BIOS/ power options and see if there is an option for shutdown with switch or software or something to that affect. Select the software option.

One small question:

What does happen when you try to shut down via the Windows command or when you press and release the power button?

If i should use :Start studown;it will go through the processs. Then it will say; "windowssshuting down".But it never did.next morning the message was the same"windows shutting down".
If should hold the pwr button down for about ,3-4 seconds.it will shutdown.

what else do you have conneceted to the laptop? Any usb devices. Sometimes windows xp will hang on shutdown on my laptop when I disconnect my thumb drive, without using the safely remove hardware option, or if a connected usb device like my MP3 player has powered itself off but is connected to the usb. I am guessing in my case it's becuase windows can't find something that it is expecting to see there. Just a thought.

This may help:
http://aumha.org/win5/a/shtdwnxp.htm

A slow shutdown can be caused by many different issues, including driver conflicts, new programs, peripherals, you name it. Take a look through that page and see if anything rings a bell.
