When I forward an e-mail to a friend who is using the same programs that I am they are unable to open the pictures.
We are both using Mozilla Firefox and Thunderbird
AVG Free anti-virus
Adaware
Spybot
I am able to open the pics, right click and some are listed as "jpg files", some are "mail files". With most of the forwards I send she gets a white box with a small little red x in the top left corner and no picture.

Is this caused by a security setting somewhere, or maybe a software issue?

Thanks

Are the pictures attachments, or like images within the message itself?

They are attachments. Example, I get an e-mail with several pictures and I can view them with no problem by scrolling down the list.

I forward it to her and all she gets is the white boxes with the little red X in
the top left of the frame.

2 choices.

1. Reattach the attachments.

2. Reply instead of forward, and edit the To: address.

Hmmm! Since I had forwarded an e-mail, I had no attachments to re-attach, however doing the reply instead of forward did do the trick.

I do not understand why this would allow the pictures to be viewed. I guess that's why I am here :D

Thanks for the help

It's a bug in Thunderbird.

Or you've set it up wrong. Under Tools > Options for T-bird. Go to Composition > Forwarding messages: What is your setting? Inline or or as an attachment? Change it to inline and your attachments should go through as usual.
