I think it depends on whether the FE was an original install or previously upgraded from 3.1 or 95. I've done an over-the-top repair using a SE disk on a FE install and it worked fine. However, one I tried a couple weeks ago said it wouldn't work with the existing os. So I tried an upgrade disk like you have and it worked fine. I suspect the one I was working on was originally upgraded from 95. If you have a full version SE, I'd try that first. If it rejects it, then try the upgrade.

Thanks PR I think it is an original install of 98fe, I do have a full version of SE, I just don't want to lose any data..So it being a store bought PC and not a home built wont make a difference??

I'd use the SE and follow the instructions in this thread for an over-the-top.

Make sure you have drivers available - the 98FE drivers may not carry over. You should be able to download them from HP in advance and put them on a CD.
