Just got Linux :)

Hi guys,

Just got Redhat Linux 6.1, I've got only one partition on my 2.4GB HDD :)

Do I have to remove all partitions (I want to dual boot with win98se if poss)

Im not that bothered if there's not much disk space left afterwards because it will only be for messing around with (I'll probably get rid of it and keep reinstalling it after a while.)

So could somebody please (although I have the manual), please tell me exactly what I need to do to install it (It's on 2 CD ROMs.)

My BIOS can boot from CD so that's not a problem, do i need to wipe my windows partition and let linux installer make on for me or will it wipe it anyway
??

Should I install Linux or Windows first ?(if I have to remove Windows)

Slow down there fatboyjim.

If you are going to dual boot, you will need to install Windows first. You may run into problems with that small of a HD and trying to have both OS's on there. I would stick in a boot disk and fdisk everything. Then create one partition of about 1.2-1.5GB for Windows. Install Windows, then stick in your RedHat Cd and install it on your free space (it can partition it for you). Install lilo when you install Linux and you can dual boot. Make sure that you make a Linux startup disk in case Windows tries to blow away lilo.

Thanks, I was thinking about 1.2gb for windows and and rest for linux (basically so Linux can have about a gb)

I'm really glad I had the right idea about what to do, I'll start now

Another thing, do you know of any messaging software compatible with Linux which is like MSN Messenger? I've got MSN for Windows but would like to be able to talk to my friends whilst fiddling around with Linux

I am now stuck. (just after typing linux in at the LILO boot) I can type dos in there and get Windows up

But once I am in I can log in as Admin or Jim but what do I type then to get into the GUI?

In Linux, it is root not admin. You also need to set up different users.

Try "startx" without quotes.You may have to run xf86config to configure x.There is also XF86Setup but the other one is simpler.HTH
