I've got a question. Why are the IBM laptops, (Thinkpad series) especially so expensive? Is there any advantages by buying a IBM laptop T series? ... per se, over the HP or Toshiba brand.

So basically I'm wondering why the laptops from IBM are so pricey?? Is it because of the enhanced security... if so what is it? Could someone help me out thanks.

They are much better than HP or compaq laptpops. I had an older thinkpad and it worked quite well for many years.. In fact I never did have a problem with it, it was company issue though and they finally upgraded us. It was only a Pentuim3 700mhz, but as I said it was a fine machine..

ThinkPads are sturdier and more reliable than any other laptop out there (besides maybe PowerBooks). They have a titanium case, accelerometer that shuts off the hard drive when you move or drop the computer, keyboard with drain holes so you don't hose your laptop when you spill something... the list goes on. In addition, they have far lower component failure rates than any other laptop manufacturer.

They are business machines, and are priced accordingly -- you will notice that the Dell Latitude series is also rather expensive -- but IBMs have traditionally commanded a premium for their reputation as a great manufacturer. It's like a Lexus -- it may cost more, but it's better built than most cars and will never break.

I See...

And I went on the IBM website and I've noticed the name changed to Lenovo. Read some more from a a google search and Lenovo bought out IBM last year? Does this mean there will be a drop in quality of IBM because they are not made by them, or will the quality assurance of the laptops continue? I'm just curious, because this has always been on my mind, would there be any changes 'cept for the name?

My T43p is a Lenovo. Still solid as a rock. I've heard some bad things about the Z series and T60, but they mostly had to do with minor design elements and not build quality. I'd skip the Z60t though... that one is apparently mediocre. The Z60m seems to be fine.

There was/is no drop in quality with the Lenovo laptops. When they bought out the CPU division of IBM the main change was the name, all the production aspects of the computers stayed the same.

My work computer is a IBM laptop and the thing is rock solid.
