I just found http://free.grisoft.com/doc/20/lng/us/tpl/v5 have not tried it yet but will have as soon as I get time.

I don't see why you would need this. Unless you run as root, which you should NEVER do, viruses are not a threat... that is unless you explicitly install one.

I must agree AVG for Linux does seem kinda un-necessary. I think there is a chance that if Linux were mainstream you might see more virus. I won't go so far as to claim Linux is virus proof, but the fact that a large portion of the web runs off of Linux based servers shows that Linux sure is pretty stable.

Is their anyway to use the Linux version under Mac OS X? I don't believe I know of a free virus scanner for OS X, and if there were some way to run it(through the terminal or some other fashion), then this would be rather handy for when people start to try and prove that Mac OS X is vulernable to viruses.

Mac OS is similar to Linux, in that you can't install programs unless you explicitly know you are installing it. I wouldn't worry about viruses for Mac. I don't see them being a problem in the near future.

While viruses are primarily targeted at Windows based OSes and therefore may not have the same effect on a Linux system, we as Linux users should keep some points in mind ...

1. If we pull down attachments from email, which can contain a virus or bug, that may not trigger in our Linux system, we may also forward some of those attachments and therefore perpetuate the problem to others who may use a Windows system and therefore we are a carrier.

2. There are bugs in certain files that someone can fix code into, that will take hold of your system.

Here is a theory that I do not see discussed ...

3. Can it be conceivable that if you run WINE and have this as your default executable for any Windows exclusive extensions (i.e., *.exe, *.msi, etc.) that maybe a file like this when downloaded can be automatically launched via WINE and run in the background, finding your Windows partition and infecting it or even worse a cleverly crafted script to affect your linux partition?
