Microsoft Word 2003 keeps deleting letters

Hello. When I try to go back and enter a word in the middle of a sentence MS Word 2003 keeps deleting the letters in front of the word. So that I am starting all over because it just deletes everything in front of it. What causes this? Is there some kind of setting. It ocurrs in Outlook as well. Very annoying. thanks

thanks, although, after thinking about it, I went to options under edit and noticed that "overtype mode" was checked. I don't recall Word doing this before and have no idea why it is checked. Not sure why that would be the default or why it would revert to that setting. Doesn't seem like a very useful setting.
