I don't even know how to ask the questions. My problem is that I have a spreadsheet in Excel that has a column (amoungst others) for email addresses. If I right click on one of them that is underlined and blue, it suddenly causes an event to happen. It tries to spawn 62 emails! I am using Netscape and it is trying to use Internet Explorer to create and send these messages so I just X all 62. Some of the addresses are not blue and do not cause this event and naturally the empty (column - line intersections) boxes cause no action.

What is this action called? Is it something to do with "Hyperlink"? How can I turn it off?

Can you tell me what it is and where to look to read up on reconfiguring it, if I only knew what it is.

Yes, you click on a hyperlink (an e-mail address *is* a hyperlink) and it will open your default e-mail program with a blank message addressed to that address.

You did not tell us what version of Excel you are using, but in Excel 2000, here's a Microsoft article that addresses this behavior:

Hmm - that's what I have - and dont have any settings involving hyperlinks.

Hey glc, I finally figured the only way I could break the hyperlink was to copy the entire worksheet, open a new sheet, paste special and use values.

After doing some more investigation, I suspect that the initial sheet was created in lotus, converted to excel and that is why I couldn't break the links. I did find some help, eventually, but it wouldn't work.
