I was wondering if there was a way to take a file that is 897mb and compress it down to fit on a 700mb cd.
If anyone has any idea on a free program or way to do this please let me know.
I do not have a jumpdrive nor do I want to purchase one for this. This is only going to be a one time thing.
I am on dialup at the moment so trying to download or email it would take forever.
Thanx,
Kas

What kind of file is it? Is it already compressed? If not, just download a compression utility like WinZip or WinRAR.

No, we don't help people pirate software on these forums. Read the forum rules (http://forum.pcmech.com/rules.php):
9. Zero Tolerance on Piracy
NO WAREZ. NO SERIALS. NO CRACKS / CRACKING / ILLEGAL PROGRAMS. Anything that can be used in software piracy or other illegal software activities will result in a ban. Same goes for abusive programs like mailbombers, forum and usenet flooders and email harvesting bots. This also includes unreleased products. Workarounds which comprimise security, bypass password protection, or otherwise go to gain unauthorized access to private data or information is prohibitied. Links provided to locations that offer tutorials or tips for any of these activities are also forbidden.

Americas army is a free download. The game is sponsered by the US Army.
I am not pirating this game.
If you go to Americasarmy.com you can get it there.

If it is free software, then it is okay. You can try to compress it with a compression utility. It may or may not get it small enough.

If you right click the file > Send to > compressed (zipped) folder>location of your choice. Then burn the compressed file to CD. This assumes you're using XP.

When I do that I get the following message "For Compressed (zipped) Folders to handle ZIP files correctly, the application associated with them must be Compressed (zipped) Folders. Currently this is not the case.
Do you want to designate Compressed (zipped) Folders as the application for handling ZIP files?" Then it gives me the choice of Yes or No.
It will start compressing no matter if I hit Yes or No.
It does not give me the option of choosing a location.
What to do form here??

Find the ZIP file it created. It is probably in the same folder as the original, with the same name. I'm not sure exactly, since I use WinRAR and not Windows' built-in ZIP stuff.
The time it takes to compress depends on how powerful the processor is and how much memory you have.

Install WinRAR, then right-click on the file and select "Add to archive...". Select ZIP as the archive format, then change the filename if you want and hit OK.
I doubt that it will compress far enough, installation executables are usually heavily compressed already. You can use Winrar or Winzip to create a SPLIT compressed file - break it into 2 pieces and burn 2 CD's. The help system in both apps will tell you how to do that.
