When you build using an AMD 64 bit processor, do you have to use Windowsx64 with it, or does the old winx32 work fine?

Also if you do decide to use the winx64, can all normal programs (word, games, ect.) work fine with it? Or do you have to run patches for them to work properly?

Finally, if I use the 64 processor with winx32, is there any catches?

What's the benifit for either way? What's the Cons?

nope, none you can have x64 capability, but not have a 64bit os.

Call me a noob (not really, been at this for 12 yrs. This is just the first 64 bit). But I didn't understand what you meant?

I can have the 64 proc. with winx32 and still have 64 bit capability?

AMD64 CPU's support simultaneous 64/32 bit processing, meaning you can essentially run 32 bit and 64 bit app's at the same time. it also applies for the use of a 64 bit OS. But if you want to run 64 bit apps, I believe you need at least a 64 bit OS. So to answer your question. Yeah it should all work fine

Actually, for the moment it is best to stick with 32 bit OSes. There is not the needed driver support for x64, and their supposed 32 bit application abilities are decieving in that many programs (which are 32 bit) do not run properly in x64 - or might not run at all. Yes, you have the ability to use a 64 bit OS with the 64 bit procs, but in all honesty, stick with XP 32 bit if wanting to use Windows and still be able to run your 32 bit applications properly. Save yourself the headache.

as ryan says, dont go for x64 win, i did, and im regretting every single second of it:(

I have to agree. The truth is, the support for Windows 64bit is VERY limited. I had to struggle to just install things like service packs and the .NET framework. Its gonna be awhile before that boat sails.
