Building a simple PC

Hi Everyone

Someone needs a computer for just basic stuff like internet, email, dvd burning, XP Home Edition, etc. nothing sophisticated, no games, video, audio production or any high end application nothing on that level. Just the average computer but still a well reasonably built computer.

Can someone here advise on hardwares to get to build such a computer?

if low end, low buget, get a dell along with their rebates, you could save quite a bit.

For low budget basic system like that, a Dell or other major brand would be a better deal. Building yourself, you just can't match the bulk parts prices they have access to. Look around, and if you still want to build, we will of course be glad to help you out.

Alright, lets see what we can do while sticking to good brands. I would say stick to on-board video. I'm writting this before working on the parts list, but I'll make sure to list a motherboard with a PCI-E x16 in case they want to add a video card later on.

Please clarify - I want the budget for JUST the case and contents including OS unless you already have one (please indicate) - NO monitor, keyboard, mouse, etc. 800 bucks for that is a heck of a lot more than a basic PC. When you do that I'll work you up an Intel build.

They really don't know specifically what they want so I am trying to get the list together for them. I used to build them a while back I'm just not up-to-date.

Any help will be appreciated as my list is only a rough.

800 bucks for the ENTIRE system? Including speakers, monitor, keyboard, mouse, printer, scanner, what? Monitor size and type?

Help me out here a bit, please. I've got to have a number to work with to put you together a balanced system.

Just a hair over 800 bucks - but sales tax will push it up to right around $900. Note that this includes *everything* for a complete turnkey system. No way can we do a 800 FSB Intel in this budget - and for a basic system you don't need it. These are all *quality* components, no cheap junk here.
