just got a new case and power supply and now my computer shuts off after 10 seconds

hi i just bought a new case and power supply last night and once i had everything installed as soon as i plug the pc into the power strip it turns on automatically and then shuts off after about ten seconds. the computer was working fine with my old case and power supply wich was 50 watts less then my new one. illlist my specs below.

ASUS A8R-MVP
AMD ATHLON 64 3500+
ATI RADEON X1600 PRO PCIE
CREATIVE SOUNDBLASTER AUDIGY 2ZS
500 WATT POWER SUPPLY

I was using liquid cooling but my water pump broke last night so im using the stock cpu fan. I did have the computer on for about an hour last night and my wife used it for about two hours today and it shut itself off while we were out of the room and ever since then ive been having my current problem. Also how much thermal paste are you supposed to use with a socket 939 cpu i used toi have an intel socket 478 and im sure its different

just an updater to my problem. i completly took everything out of my case and set up my mobo video card and ram and the mobo booted up but after about a minute it shut down again. and before i did this i took off my cpu fan and reapplied some arctic silver just to make sure so thats where im at now

What is the brand and wattage of the new power supply? The old one?

the old power supply was generic the new one is made by ultra the old power supply is 450 watts and my new one is 500watts i tested both power supplies on my mobo tonight and the same thing is happening with either power supply

The PSUs are going to draw similar amounts of power. Perhaps your heatsink isn't attached properly? Since you were wondering, you can compare installation instructions here (http://www.arcticsilver.com/instructions.htm) depending on which type of thermal compound is most similar to what you're using.

I was going to ask if you remembered to plug in the power to the video card, but I doubt it would work (at all, let alone for 2 hours) if you forgot this step.

well what i did was i just connected my mobo vid card and keyboard andpower supply outside of the case and i went in to the bios and watched the cpu temp the temp got up to 96.5 degrees F and then shut off is this a shutdown temp for a amd athlon 64 3500+ socket 939?

Shutdown temp should be around 80C or so.

so is there any reason why a computer would just shut down then because it did the same thing when i tested my old power supply and 3 days ago the computer was running fine with the old power supply

Was it THIS (http://www.radioshack.com/product/index.jsp?productId=2179650)PSU or something similar?

If so you should read through this (http://forums.pcper.com/showthread.php?t=415394) thread as that PSU appears to be a dud.

no its an ultra power supply that came with an ultra case and i tried it on 2 different psu and got the same results both times

So same problem with multiple PSU's. Alright, how about eliminating other components. Remove everything from the MOBO. Install only 1 stick of ram and video card. Boot it up and see how it goes. If it's still quarky try a different stick of ram. Repeat if necessary. If you have another video card you can try then try it, even if it's a PCI card.
