Okay this isnt on the same page as all the other posts in this forum, but it has to do with System Security and Privacy i think.

After reading "Building a Simple Home Monitoring System"

I went into DEEP thinking.

I have an oldddd Sony Vaio. I have no idea the specs on it, but im thinking its from between 95-97. It had Windows 95 on it, and then we upgraded to 98 a few years later. So were talking possibly 10 years old.

Now this is what i want to do with it.

Possibly set it up so it hides the computer i use. Its tough for me to explain, but sort of like a proxy, so my computer's IP cant be caught. Making me computer anonymous? Is this making any sense?

Thanks for any help, if you have questions im sure they will help this discussion to figure out what i want.

You can find anonymous proxies that are free to use on the internet. You can surf with them using Firefox.

1. Download and install Firefox (http://www.getfirefox.com) if you have not already
2. Download and install SwitchProxy (http://www.roundtwo.com/product/switchproxy)
3. Google for free proxies

I know, but it would be cooler to have a seperate computer to do all my dirty work. And i dont want just my firefox anonymous, i dont want people getting my IP, through IRC, AIM, MSN, YAHOO, anything.

IP spoofing is not legal. What you need is a router and if you don't already have one, you can turn that old box into a router/firewall with a Linux install.

Does the laptop have two or more NICs and a CD drive? If it has two NICs, then you can use Smoothwall or another linux firewall distro to make it work like a router.

I wrote this one awhile back about smoothwall and might be of some help to you. http://www.pcmech.com/show/network/868/

There are some add ons for Smoothwall too (check their forums) that can do some nifty stuff in asisting in keeping your identity anonymous. But, I won't get into the details, as I am not entirely sure they are all "legal".
