View Full Version : hard drive root directory

I installed a second hard drive on a friend's computer. She can copy a directory (with files in it) from the C to the E drive easily. But when I try to copy a single file to the E drive (without directories), I get an error mesage:

Cannot copy *file name*: Access is denied. Make sure the disk is not full or write-protected and that the file is not currently in use.

The hard drive is new, already formatted. I right clicked on E, clicked the Sharing tab, but there's no option to correct this. This problem is annoying, she can only copy single files from C to E if she's using the admin account. However, she can also copy a single file to a directory in E.

Seems like she can't copy files to the "root" directory. Is there a way to allow this?

Okay this sounds like an ACL problem. Do you have Windows XP home, Pro or Windows 2000 ? Tell us which and we'll try to explain how to fix this.

She has Win XP. When I brought over my usb flash drive and external hard drive, I can copy single files to the root directory of these devices. The computer doesn't like to copy files to just E:, it only copies to be E:/*directory*/

What is ACL?

Log into the administrator account, disable simple file sharing (folder options, view - bottom entry), right click on the E drive, select Security, and make sure "Everyone" has Full Control.

Where is this option? I don't see it when I right click on My Computer, and Manage.

OK, logged in as admin, opened my computer, right clicked on E: drive. But I don't see a folder options tab or button. I only see: general, tools, hardware, sharing, and quota tabs. None of these tabs have folder options, view, or security.

I'm banging my head against the wall on this one.

1. Open Control Panel, switch to Classic view.
2. Open Folder Options, go to the View tab, scroll down, disable simple file sharing.
3. Reboot.
4. NOW open My Computer, right click on the E drive. Look for the Permissions button.

I see no permissions button but there will be an extra "Security" tab in the drive properties after disabling Simple File Sharing. flcpge, if you click on the Security tab, you will see a list of every user/group with access rights on that drive. Is your friend's user name/account name among them ? If not, use "Add" to add her. Then grant her full control rights.
