one of the computers in my lab has very strict password setting requirements.
i did not install the OS (XP) on this machine and i don't know who did.
when setting a password, it demands at least one uppercase, one lowercase, one number and one symbol and be at least 8 characters long.
this is annoying and i want to get rid of it.
how can this be done?

You need to be the admin to do this:
Open the group Policy editor (start > run > gpedit.msc)
Navigate to: Local Computer Policy > Computer Configuration > Windows Settings > Security Settings > Account Policies > Password Policy
You should see a setting for "Password must meet complexity requirements" double click on it to disable it.
If you require further information on each of the settings, open your windows help and do a search for "Security Setting descriptions" and check out Account policies
The brute force/inelegant method is to go into the registry: http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb%3Ben-us%3B555540
