Have a couple of Gateway 450ROG laptops with onboard ATI video with a strange problem. Sometimes, upon reboot, the resolution gets set to the maximum (1450 by 1000 or something), instead of the 1024x768 that it is supposed to be at. I've never seen it happen myself: when I set it back to 1024x768 and reboot, it sticks. But somehow it's getting switched back. What could be causing this?
-Virus and/or spyware
-Dodgy video driver
-Defective video adapter

No viruses or spyware. I've checked.
The video driver is the same updated driver from Windows Update that I have installed on countless other machines without problem.
There are no other defects in the video card that I can see. It appears to be purely a Windows issue.
Try the Gateway driver instead of the Microsoft driver.
Also, see if a clean boot finds anything.
