Hello, I run a small LAN department that supports about 400 PC's / laptops and about 12 servers. I am looking for some new software tools and wondered if anyone had any recomendations?:

1. A hardware diagnostic utility. Something that can scane any PC based hardware regardless of mfg. It also needs to be able to run from a disk and be bootable to test a machine that may not boot into Windows any more

2. A good disk quota utility to run on my file servers. Something that integrates with AD and is more flexible than the crap that comes with 2000 Server

3. A good un-delete / data recovery program for when users accidentally delete files or files get corrupt

4. a good PC hardware benchmarking utility

All should be (if possible) site license-able so that I can use them legally on more than 1 PC. Thanks for your suggestions!

The first thing you should do is download the open-source Ultimate Boot CD. This is chock full of useful utilities that don't cost a cent.

The best data recovery utility, bar none, is Ontrack Easy Recovery. A site or technician's license will cost you a small fortune though. Reserve the purchase till you truly need it. PC Inspector File Recovery, however, is unrestricted freeware. You should have that ready to go. It's nowhere near as good as Ontrack but it's definitely worth trying first.
