com can't detect external hard drive nor play any cd???

I have a Dell Inspiron 600m notebook computer. suddendly it won't detect any type of external hard drive. I've tried my mp3 player, iomega hdd external hard drive, my digital camera. When I plug in the hard drives, it just show an icon under hard disk drives, but nothing else. when I double click the icon, it says "disk is not formatted". In addition, I can't play any cd nor dvd now. Can any body help me out here?

I would first be looking for malware on your computer.

Go to "system security and privacy" and read the sticky's about what security programs to use.
