This is related to a problem I related in another thread, to which I've now tracked down the cause. After a recent update of the HP Imaging Software on my system (for an HP psc 2510 all-in-one), a program called HPOSM.EXE attempts to execute once an hour, and also triggers another program, hptskmgr.exe. The problem with this is, the execute forces any fullscreen program in operation to minimize, which often causes the other program to crash, freeze, or similarly foul up.

How do I get rid of this program, while still maintaining functionality for the printer? It's a WinXP box--if any other system specs seem relevant, I'll include those, but this appears to be a fairly well-defined issue now.

Click on Start->Run and type MSCONFIG->Look in the startup tab. Should be able to uncheck them and keep em from loading at startup.

Unfortunately, there aren't any matches for those two files in the msconfig list. There are three HP-related startup programs--hpcmpmgr, HP Director, and some other utility. I'd uninstalled HP Updater on a previous pass.

So, we'll MSConfig these and see if the problem stops, then bring them back one at a time. Given the once-an-hour recurrence of the problem, though, it's going to require a chunk of time to pinpoint.
