painting case

Hey guys ive decided to paint my case and i have read alot of tutorials on how to but i got one question. I'm starting with a plain metal side panel, where as most tutorials use painted surfaces which they use sand paper to rub down first for the primer, my question is that as i have no paint on my side panel do i need to sand the metal or can i apply the primer directly onto it.

Yes, you should sand and clean it also.

I've also got a grill i want to paint however it's a mesh that has loads of small holes in it allowing airflow. Whats the risk of painting it and having the holes blocked. Should i only put little primer and paint on it or is there a tip to avoid ending up with a grill with no air flow?

It depends on the size of the holes. If they are kinda small I would definitely not reduce their size too much.

well their the front grills on the coolermaster stacker, and they are small. shame because I wanted a while case with metalic blue bits, guess i'll have to re-think my colour scheme as the grills will be staying black.

You can also go ahead and paint the grill, then open up / remove the paint from the holes with a drill bit or the like (kinda like opening up the holes in a pepper shacker :) ).

yeah that would work but, the initial holes in the mesh bit are more like 1mm size, so i could push a hole through the paint once it's dry, but would have to use a needle and then i guess i might end up chipping the paint. Might have to try it on one drive bay cover and see what happens.

Last minute check about the painting, If i wanted to have two colours on a side panel whats the best way of doing this. Is it best to spray the whole panel one colour let it dry and then mask off the bit i want and spray the second colour, or should mask the primer and do one colour then mask that colour to do the other one???

Typically, you'd do the one color wholly, then the other.
