O kay I just bought a 6 gig Philips player
Model # HDD1630/17
Some of the 3.5 ish gigs i have on my PC play but the rest I have is protedted for some reason. And some of the CDs i can't recopy because they are seriously scratched up. I copied them to my PC as soon I i got it built and now some of the CDs are now unusable. How can i get them to work.
HELP!

One trick that someone once told me to get oscratched cd's to play again without skipping was to buff them up using car wax. I did try it out on a cd I knew was skipping, and believe it or not, after taking the wax off the cd worked fine again. Of course, this technique only works up to a certain amount of scratching. It won't work on a completly destroyed cd. Hope this helps.

also, it never hurts to clean your CD drive....the combination of that and Floppy's suggestion just might get you thru

I find that cleaning it improves the chances of it working. I mean REALLY cleaning it. Take some dishwashing soap and scrub it for at least a minute with your fingers or something that does not scratch soft plastic. Spend another minute rinsing it off. Dry it with a clean 100% cotton towel and of course don't touch the surface again. Try it again if it still will not play...sometimes the dirt is really deep in the scratches.
My guess is that dirt and dust on a microscopic level gets into the scratches and absorbs the light instead of reflecting it back where it should be reflecting back. I don't think it has a whole lot to do with light refracting from a scratch. This has worked for numerous Netflix movies that I have rented which were scratched so badly that it looked like there was no way the DVD would ever work...but did after a good cleaning.
