I have installed red hat 9 on a second Hard drive attached to the secondary ide channel, but whenever I attempt to boot I receive a "kernel panic".

Since I didn't detect any driver issues during the install I am thinking that the cause could possibly have something to do with the format of the / partition. I used ext3 on all partitions. Should I have used fat on the first partition? Or any other suggestions on what to troubleshoot.

thanks

There was, most likely, an error during the install. I've encountered this before and a complete format and reinstall fixed it.

I reformatted and reinstalled but the same error occured, even when using a boot disk.

Are you switching the IDE cables around after you do the install?

Where did you install the boot loader? that might the problem, I let it write over the MBR (hda1) so when I boot up the system LILO will give me a choice either windows or linux.

Thanks for the suggestions, I think the issue was related to drivers since I normally installed Redhat 9 on older PII or PIII machines. Anyhow I went ahead and installed Fedora 5, I haven't had a chance to use it, but at least it's booting.

thanks again
