Analog or digital?

Whats the main differance between analog output and digital output(besides the obvious). I hooked up the digital side of my video to my LCD screen and i cant really tell much diff. visually.

When it comes to monitors on your computer, the difference is signal quality.

DVI is a purely digital signal from the video card to the screen.

Analogue means that the digital signal the video card produces has to be converted to analogue when it goes through the connection, then back to digital on the screen. The conversion can degrade the quality.

I couldn't notice the difference when I switched from VGA to DVI, most people can't either.

However, like Alaron said, there is a finer image quality with DVI, even if it may be neglagible to some

Well, when I had an analog display, sometimes when the res changed, the screen wouldn't be aligned correctly. That never happens with DVI.

In some cases analog connections can be subject to distortion which doesn't happen in digital. But the main difference between digital and analog is that they are two methods of sending a signal. The Analog method merely converts the signal to audio or video at the receiver's end, which may carry distortions or interference it might've picked up along the way. However, in digital, the signal received is interpreted as data which is used by a processor to create audio or video from that data locally. In other words, in digital systems, the audio or video signal is actually created at the receiver's end. Therefore, since only the data received is interpreted it doesn't recreate interference or distortion the signal may have picked up along the way. In the transmitter's or sender's end only the information needed to create the audio or video is transmitted, but not the video or audio itself.

General rule of thumb; whenever possible, use DVI. Use VGA only as a fallback plan.

I am not sure of the differences, but I know one thing for sure digital quality usually never looses quality and analog can go down in quality (when transfering it to another source). Go digital because now everything is being digital. You can however go from analog to digital and to make analog better quality.

the only thing I don't understand is what is the difference between analog and digital cd players? Isn't all pressed CD's digital? What do they mean analog cd player or digital? I had a small portable digital CD player before.
